When you live alone it’s helpful to have

a game plan for when crap happens.

I should listen to my advice.

I broke a bone in my hand this past week but

The hand is not my main focus…

Being prepared is…

This is a reminder to have good professionals in

place and advocate for yourself.

I had no references for a good urgent care, so

I chose an urgent care from yelp that had on-site x-rays.

When I arrived at the urgent care

the x-ray technician was not on site.

I was referred to another urgent care.

Drove to the new urgent care, where

they took x-rays and discovered, indeed

I had a broken bone in my hand.

I left with a splint on my hand and a

referral to an orthopedist.

The phrase “once they get the referral, they will call you”

is your clue to pay attention.

There is no guarantee people will have

the sense of urgency you need,

Or even follow through.

I called back the urgent care because

I wanted to know the name of the referral,

and how long it would take to hear from them.

Urgent care said it would be about a week.

A week?

It was Tuesday !!!!

I have an unset broken bone in my hand.

My thoughts start spinning.

How am I going to get my needs met?

If I was prepared with an urgent care I trusted

I could have avoided these spun out thoughts,

helpless feelings, and delays.

Do you know where you would go if the unexpected happens?

I took action, but for a moment I didn’t want to….

I wanted to pull back and not fight for myself.

When you live alone that’s what you have to do

Fight for yourself.

I called the referral to the orthopedist.

They never received the referral and don’t do hands.

More delay.

I was directed to a hand specialist.

I wanted a second opinion but

My primary never called back.

By now I was getting concerned

as I’m getting close to the weekend.

I knew if I waited too long I may need surgery

or my hand may need to be re-broken.

My concern amps up as I have no control

over how fast or how accurate these people are

at making referrals.

I called the hand specialist directly and I’m happy to share,

I was able to get an appointment the next day.

I wasn’t prepared

I wasted a lot of time.

I created a lot of stress for myself.

You are your best advocate.

Call your insurance company to know

where you are covered by insurance before you need it.

Keep looking for good people.

Always follow up on people to ensure they

have done what was needed.

I know this can be hard when you live alone …

You got this…
