When recently divorced you can feel the the hurt
and loss of family pretty profoundly.
Past holidays are moments where we distinctly remember where we were,
who we were with and what we were doing.
Holidays remind us of family, friends, closeness and connection.
It’s hard. It hurts. It really does.
When a family blows apart through divorce a lot of the established traditions go away.
If you were like me, all my holidays and events were spent with the in-laws.
When I got divorced I was alone. Me and my dog.
As the holidays approached I pretty much felt sorry for myself.
The child came out in me and I made myself feel bad for not having a gift to open.
I struggled for a few years on how to do holidays in a way I felt good about.
I worked a lot of holidays.
Wouldn’t recommend that as a coping skill as it gets old fast.
Then ……I realized
I could buy my own flowers on Valentine’s Day .
Made my own food and hiked up hills with my dog on Thanksgiving.
Bought my own damn present, wrapped the gift, and opened it up on Christmas.
And I always liked what I got.
The point is….I took care of my needs.
I took care of myself.
Hopefully, most of you have friends and family to surround yourself.
Cry if you need to
Ask for what you need and ….
Take very good care of yourself.
Try not to spend much time in the suffering of what’s been lost.
Gratitude for what you have always feels better…..
I’m very grateful for all of you …..
As I watch you all get stronger and more confident
in who you were meant to be….
You inspire me to be stronger, better and braver…
